Happy World Water Day!

March 22, 2013 Leave a comment

2013-03-22 World Water DayMarch 22 is World Water Day. Use today to think about the importance of freshwater and sustainable freshwater resources.

Even better, 2013 is the International Year of Water Cooperation. If you wish to learn more about this prestigious year or learn how you can contribute, visit the UN Water Cooperation website.

In the meantime, celebrate today with a cold, refreshing glass of H2O. Unless you’re in Alberta, where they just got a large dump of snow. Then you may want to heat it up and enjoy it infused with tea.

PICA at NASTT

March 8, 2013 Leave a comment

The PICA team has just returned from a successful trip out west to the Annual NASTT No-Dig conference. Bill Jappy and Chris Garrett looked after the PICA booth as conference attendees wandered the exposition hall.

Csaba Ekes stopped by to discuss how his SewerVue tool can be combined with PICA’s SeeSnake inspections to offer Condition Assessment of all pipe materials. Many members of the 3M team visited the booth to reinforce the strength of the recently signed strategic alliance between the two companies. Dan Ellison and Frank Blaha also stopped by to discuss some of the logistics of their upcoming Water Research Foundation project “Leveraging Data from Non-Destructive Examinations to Help Select Ferrous Water Mains for Renewal“. These are just a few examples of the great conversations taking place around No-Dig.

If you were able to swing by the booth, thank you for your interest and time. If you were unable to see us, that’s okay – drop us a quick email or phone call and we will happily bring you up to speed.

Check back soon to get an overview of some of the great presentations we attended during the week.

PICA in 2013!

February 28, 2013 Leave a comment

While the blog has been a little quiet since the New Year, that doesn’t mean the PICA team has been.

January started off with Bill Jappy and Chris Garrett attending the Vancouver and Seattle Water Research Foundation Condition Assessment Workshops, respectively. Bill and Chris were pleasantly surprised at the amount of presentation time committed to discussing the SeeSnake tool. The SeeSnake was positively mentioned in many presentations, whether discussing previous work from California to Canada or talking about the prospects of how to best utilize the technology going forward. Be sure to stop by the WRF website to access the PowerPoint slides. Lots of good information available there.

February was busy with site visits and customer meetings. Also of note, PICA joined NASSCO and participated in its annual conference. Chris traveled to the Florida Keys to make a brief presentation, meet lots of engaged and impressive industry leaders and to play a little golf (Editor’s note: Chris did not tell us his golf score…) PICA is looking forward to joining some NASSCO committees and contributing to this great organization.

Lastly, March is fast approaching and that means NASTT No-Dig. Bill and Chris will be hosting the PICA booth (#326). Also be sure to catch Chris’s presentation with Kelly Derr of Brown & Caldwell. On Tuesday morning at 8:30am, these two gentlemen will be discussing the advantages of the SeeSnake, specifically in regard to a recent contract in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. If you are attending the Sacramento conference, be sure to drop by and say hello!

Come one, come all to PICA’s booth at the ASCE Pipelines Conference in Miami Beach. The first two days of the conference have seen lots of great discussion at our booth as Bill, Ed and Chris answer questions about the SeeSnake tools and future inspections.

We still have plenty of drink koozies and hats to give away, so don’t be shy. Booth 805 is located along the wall in the end aisle.

<Editor’s Note: I didn’t know what a koozie was either but trust me, you want one.>

PICA paper receives a 97% rating at NASTT No-Dig in TN.

June 22, 2012 Leave a comment

Many companies can offer an extensive list of the pros (many) and cons (few) of their technologies. No doubt, they are even true. Personally. I like to see case studies that give more practical information including a description of why the technology was needed, what pipeline or tool adaptations needed to be done to facilitate  using the technology, challenges faced (and hopefully overcome) and what the results were. And case studies usually provide a story-style narrative that makes it a better read than technology specifications.

Chris Garrett (PICA USA) and Ad Shatat (Russell NDE Systems) presented a paper at the NASTT No-Dig this year that scored in the top 1% of papers presented. Titled “NDE Techniques for Water and Wastewater Pipe Condition Assessment”, it offers two case studies:

  • 30 year old 12-in steel water main in Hong Kong
  • 20 year old 24-in ductile iron wastewater line in Missouri

Both lines were in sensitive areas, had fragile liners that could not be damaged and were inspected using PICA’s free-swimming SeeSnake RFT technologies.

To view this highly rated paper, click here. I am looking forward to the sequel.
